Sehra Bandi & Ghodi Chadhi

The groom’s turban is tied, sehra placed, and he mounts the mare.
A short but deeply traditional ceremony at the groom’s home before the baraat sets off. A small ardaas blesses the turban and sehra. The father ties the turban, the brother-in-law (or sister) ties on the sehra (a curtain of pearls or flowers covering the face), the sister-in-law applies a black surma dot to ward off the evil eye, and the groom is handed a ceremonial sword. The decorated mare is fed dal and water by the female relatives, the groom mounts (ghodi chadhna), and the dancing baraat sets off.
A little history
The ghodi chadhna is one of the oldest surviving Punjabi wedding rituals, pre-dating most of what we now think of as the Sikh wedding. The sehra was originally functional (protecting the groom from sun and dust on the journey to the bride’s village) and became symbolic only later. The black surma dot is the same nazar-utaarna logic as in many South Asian cultures: dust, kohl, or smoke to deflect envy. After the kalgi is tied, the groom’s sister stands between him and the door and refuses to let him leave until he presents her a gift, the doorway version of the same playful ransom as the joota chhupai.
