Quick answer: A Punjabi-Sikh wedding is a sequence of ceremonies, not one event. In order, it runs Roka → Sagai → Akhand Path → Sangeet → Mehndi → Maiyan → Jaggo → Choora → Anand Karaj (the wedding itself, with the Milni and Sehra Bandi that morning) → Doli/Vidaai → Reception. Pre-wedding events can be months apart; the main events are usually a packed 3–5 days.

Maybe you've never planned one. Maybe you're marrying into a Punjabi family, quietly wondering what all these names mean. Either way, this is the map. Each ceremony below links to a fuller guide, and if you want every milestone landed on a real calendar date, the free wedding timeline generator builds one from your wedding day backwards.

The pre-wedding ceremonies

These happen first, often months before the main week, as two families agree the match and begin the celebrations.

  1. Roka and Thaka: the first formal step, where both families agree to the match and exchange blessings and gifts.
  2. Sagai / Kurmai: the engagement, with the ring exchange and, traditionally, the groom being fed by the bride's family.
  3. Chunni Chadai: the groom's family welcomes the bride with a chunni, jewellery and an outfit.
  4. Shagun and Sahe Chithi: the giving of blessings and the formal letter fixing the wedding date.

The build-up: the wedding week begins

  1. Akhand Path: a continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, completed (the Bhog) on the morning of the wedding.
  2. Sangeet: the big musical night: dancing, dhol, and choreographed performances from both sides. (Planning one? A song-request page keeps the DJ's list in one place.)
  3. Mehndi: henna for the bride and the women of the family, usually an evening of colour and music.
  4. Haldi / Maiyan: turmeric paste (vatna) applied to the bride and groom at their own homes; everyone wears yellow.
  5. Jaggo: the late-night "wake the village" celebration, with a decorated gaggar (pot) carried on the head, dholki and boliyan.
  6. Choora: the bride's maternal uncle (mama) and aunt gift the red-and-white bangles she wears as a new bride, with the kaleere tied on top.

The wedding day: the Anand Karaj

The morning of the wedding brings three moments in quick succession:

  1. Sehra Bandi: the groom is dressed, the sehra tied, and he's sent off with an ardaas before the baraat leaves.
  2. Milni: the two families formally meet at the venue: elders are introduced pair by pair, garlanded, and often gifted. This is the "families become one" moment.
  3. Anand Karaj: the marriage itself, in the Gurdwara before the Guru Granth Sahib. The couple take four rounds (the Laavan), each a stage of spiritual union. We break this down in the Anand Karaj explained.

After the wedding

  1. Doli / Vidaai: the emotional farewell as the bride leaves with her new family.
  2. Reception: the celebration dinner: the couple's grand entrance, speeches, food and dancing late into the night.

How long does all this take?

Every family does it slightly differently. Some merge the Mehndi and Sangeet, some skip the Jaggo, some hold the reception in a second country. The order above is the traditional spine; you adapt it to your family, your budget and your guest list.

Planning it yourself?

The two things that overwhelm people are the sequence and the budget. This guide is the sequence. For the money, the free budget calculator gives you a realistic total in your own currency (with the rupee equivalent alongside), and the full planning kit turns all of the above into a shared checklist, guest list and day-by-day run sheet the whole family can work from.
